Le Mans Ultimate: The Alpine A424 Hypercar Joins The Grid

The A424 Hybrid Hypercar, from the French sports car manufacturer Alpine joins the WEC grid.

Alpine returned to the highest echelon of Endurance racing in 2024, specifically to tackle this new hybrid era, with the striking A424 Hypercar prototype.

Having been a team previously on the top step of the 24 hours of Le Mans they join the grid with one goal in mind. To repeat the teams’ previous glory days of the 70’s and win another 24 hours of Le Mans in the modern era of endurance racing.

The team unveiled the brand new hypercar ahead of the centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 and boasted a formidable line-up of drivers that would make up the team for a two-car entry in 2024, with Pau-Loup Chatin, Ferdinand Habsburg and Charles Milesi piloting the #35 car while, Nicolas Lapierre, Matthieu Vaxivere and Mick Schumacher take charge of the #36 A424.

The car was first fired up on July 5 of that year and the program first completed 2 shakedown tests at Lurcy-Lévis at the end of August. The test programme then continued running at Circuit Paul Ricard, Motorland Aragón, Jerez and Portimão, which included a full 30-hour endurance practice race to help replicate the gruelling conditions of round-the-clock racing for the entire team.

The World Endurance Championship

The team’s start to life was a positive one at Qatar, finishing 7th and 11th overall on debut, clearly showing all the preparations were paying dividends. Imola was a slight reality check with the two teams finishing near the rear of the field in 13th and 16th overall, before bouncing back to grab another top-10 result at Spa-Francorchamps.

The team experienced a bumpy ride during the 24 hours of Le Mans with both the #35 and #36 cars retiring from the event. Not something the French outfit would have wanted on home soil. But since then it’s been nothing but positive improvements.

Sao Paulo the #36 team was back inside the top 10, whilst Circuits of the Americas gave the team its best overall results of the season. A 5th and 9th place finish respectively for both cars was just what they needed as they carried momentum with development and understanding of the car.

Japan was the latest round in September and the best pair of results for a new 2024 car in the season so far came in Fuji, with a stunning 3rd overall for the #36 and 7th overall for the #35.

One more round remains as the Alpine outfit will fly out to Bahrain International Circuit looking to close out the World Endurance Championship season in style. Will they get their first win since returning to the grid?
